Mind Strength – Great Leaders Don't Weaponize the Past
Jun 15, 2026
Do you as a leader allow those you are leading to “Play the Next Play?”
We know how important it is when it comes to high performance and success… having the ability to move from one play to the next without carrying the baggage of the previous one with you.
But as a leader, are you allowing the people around you to do the same?
Or are you clinging to past mistakes they made under your leadership?
Do you remind them of those mistakes every chance you get?
Do you keep a tight grip on the past instead of allowing it to become a lesson for future “plays?”
This happens in relationships too.
Did your spouse make a mistake, have an errant decision, or a bad moment… and now you won’t let them “play the next play?”
Are you allowing room for growth, learning, and applying the knowledge moving forward… or are you continually bringing the past back into the present?
The best leaders I’ve been around acknowledge the past, learn from it, and then create a fresh, clean slate moving forward.
The leaders who don’t optimize tend to weaponize the past during future moments. And when that happens, it creates a fear-based and resentful environment… not a recipe for growth, trust, or success in any venture.
Great leadership doesn’t ignore accountability.
It creates an environment where people can learn, respond, and move forward without being weighed down by the past.
