Talent Without Leadership Is Talent Wasted

Feb 23, 2026

"Talent Without Leadership Is Talent Wasted"

The last couple of weeks, I’m sure you’ve seen the posts about my old teammate Sam Darnold after the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl.

A lot of the conversation has centered around grit and resilience — and rightfully so.

Sam was labeled a “bust” after things didn’t work out with the New York Jets and the Carolina Panthers. He bounced to the San Francisco 49ers, where you could see things start to stabilize. Then his comeback really took off in Minnesota before capping it off this year in Seattle.

What he accomplished was incredible to watch.

And knowing Sam — there isn’t a more humble, grounded guy.

The takeaway I want to highlight though isn’t just resilience... It’s leadership.

Organizational leadership.

“Talent without leadership is talent wasted.”

Sam has always had the talent.

But when he was in environments that lacked alignment and leadership from the top down, his talent was wasted.

The New York Jets could be an ongoing case study in this. Great talented quarterbacks have gone through there — Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Sam, and Luke Falk… 😉(just kidding)... and success didn’t follow.

Why?

Because talent alone doesn’t win. You have to have the right leadership to develop, align, and maximize the talent in the building.

Congrats to the Seahawks and their Super Bowl Championship! It’s powerful to watch what happens when talent and leadership align.

Ready to maximize the talent in your building?
