The Allure and Risks of Transferring

Oct 27, 2025

Be cautious about decisions to transfer schools, especially those involving a move or relocation. Consider carefully: Is your child driving this decision, or is it your ego stepping in? Remember, life is about more than sports. Make sure decisions are holistic and truly guided by your child’s needs, with wise parental guidance.

In high school, I experienced two major transfersone great, one disastrous. My freshman-year transfer to Logan was driven by me. My parents asked me openly, “If you could go to any school, where would it be?” Without hesitation, I chose Logan. I wanted a fresh start away from “daddy ball” and a football system ill-suited to my skillset. Logan offered family support, a spread offense, and a change I deeply desired.

The result? A total success in every wayathletically, socially, emotionally. At Thanksgiving that year, I remember saying, “I’m so grateful we live in Logan.”

But then we lost our way. My parents, influenced by a high-profile QB coach, made another moveto SouthernCalifornia. This decision wasn’t driven by me. It was fueled by dreams of higher status, greater success, and external validation. At my core, I didn’t want it, and the resulting stress fractured our family and led to significant personal struggle.

Looking back, the difference is clear: Moves initiated by the child, driven by genuine holistic needs, tend to succeed.Decisions driven by parental ego, or society’s scoreboard, often lead to regret.

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Did my child initiate this move?
  • Are they genuinely driving this decision?
  • Will this benefit them holistically (beyond sports)?
  •  Is my ego influencing this decision more than their desires?

Choose wisely. Protect your family. Life is bigger than the scoreboard.
