The Cure for Procrastination: Work First. Play Second.
Nov 17, 2025Procrastination is Stealing Your Confidence and Draining You Mentally. Here's How to Take It Back
Time isn’t the issue. We all have the same 24 hours.
The real issue is how we use our time.
There are endless distractions pulling our attention in every direction — social media, video games, phone apps — all designed to hijack focus and habits.
A lot of clients I work with are stuck in a negative loop.
They know what they should be doing, but they keep getting pulled away. The result? Procrastination, guilt, and a drained mental battery.
Here’s the truth:
When you put off something important, your mind never fully relaxes. Even when you try to “rest,” a voice in your head whispers,
“I should be doing ___.”
So while you think you’re relaxing, your mind is spinning — and that mental tension quietly drains your energy. Then the negative self-talk kicks in:
- “Why do I always do this?”
- “I’m not disciplined.”
- “Will I ever change?”
The story you tell yourself drives your response and behavior — and that’s what keeps you stuck in the negative loop.
To break the loop, you have to change your story first.
And one of the most effective ways to do that is through the Mind Strength Skill: Work First. Play Second.
When you get the important things done first, you create mental freedom to enjoy your downtime fully present — without guilt or stress.
Flip that order, and you create unnecessary weight that drags you down.
The 3-Step “Work First. Play Second.” Process
1. Speak identity first.
Say out loud: “I am disciplined.”
The story you tell yourself drives your behavior.
If you label yourself as lazy or undisciplined, you’ll act that way.
But if you speak strength, you build strength.
2. State the task clearly.
Name what you need to do — out loud and specifically:
“I need to put my phone down and go to bed now.”
“I need to finish my report now.”
Clarity creates action. When you know exactly what you need to do, your brain has a clear target to aim for.
3. Count it down and act.
Use Mel Robbins’ 5-Second Rule.
Count out loud: “1… 2… 3… 4… 5” — then move.
No thinking. No negotiating. Just act. Or as Nike says.... Just Do It!
Example:
- “I am disciplined.”
- “I need to study film right now.”
- “1, 2, 3, 4, 5” — Go do it.
Each time you follow through, you make a deposit in your confidence bank account — strengthening trust in yourself and building momentum.
Every time you delay or break your word, you make a withdrawal — draining confidence and reinforcing doubt.
Confidence is built on following through on your word.
So, use this Mind Strength Skill — Work First. Play Second.
and you’ll create more confidence, productivity, and mental freedom than you ever thought possible.
