The Press Box Perspective

The Press Box Perspective
In 2017, I won the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top player who began their career as a walk-on. (I had come in second the two years prior to Baker Mayfield—and he let me take the trophy home that year as he went on to win the Heisman haha.)
In my acceptance speech, I talked about something I had heard before and reflected on as I looked back on my career and life—and how it had all worked out.
We are the players on the field, and God is up in the press box calling the plays.
Sometimes a play comes in, and we think to ourselves, “Why the hell is that play getting called?”
But down on the field, we don’t have the full perspective—we can only see what’s in front of us. God, though, sees it all. The entire plan. And He’s calling the game accordingly.
I didn’t like the play call of the adversity I went through in high school or my lack of recruiting that led to me becoming a walk-on. But it was exactly the right play call for my life.
I’ve thought about this countless times—how things have just seemed to weave together.
There is a greater plan. And remembering that we don’t always have the full picture can bring peace in moments of what we think are “bad play calls.”
It’s a great reminder for me today as I’m currently at Cognitive FX, working through God’s current play call for me.
