Leadership is like brushing your teeth.
If you don’t brush your teeth consistently, eventually they’ll rot.
If you don’t work on your leadership and consistently invest in your team, your leadership—and your influence—will rot.
Well, I forgot that my senior year...
I had done a decent job as a leader in the years prior, but my senior year I quit brushing my leadership "teeth."
I isolated myself, quit leading by example, stopped having fun and being fun to be around, stopped investing in my teammates, and made it about me.
As a result, my leadership rotted, and I lost my influence—or, as Leach would say, my ability to elevate the group.
It’s no wonder 2017 was the worst statistical year of my career.
2015
• 4,566 passing yards
• 38 passing TD's
• 3 rushing TD's
• 8 INTs
2016
• 4,468 passing yards
• 38 passing TD's
• 11 INTs
2017
• 3,593 passing yards
• 30 passing TD's
• 13 INTs
Leadership isn't something you earn once. It’s not an end destination.
It's something you maintain.
If you don't consistently invest in the people around you and strengthen those relationships, they won't be as strong when you need them most—and neither will your ability to influence the group.
As John Maxwell says:
"Leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less."
