That is a line and mantra I repeat whenever I feel doubt creeping in about whether I can accomplish something, whether I am qualified for the job, or whether I belong at the next level.
Someone is going to win the championship. Someone is going to become the head coach, the CEO, the millionaire, the best selling author, or the great parent.
Why not me? Why not you?
A major part of what derailed my NFL career was that, instead of asking, “Why not me?” I was thinking, “How could it be me?”
My lack of belief in myself and my abilities placed an upper limit on my potential. You can only succeed to the level you believe yourself capable of succeeding and, more importantly, worthy of succeeding.
In fact, that lack of belief was a significant factor in why I chose not to declare for the NFL Draft after my junior year.
Yes, I felt like I had unfinished business. I wanted to return and win a Pac 12 championship. Those things were true, but they also made it easy to justify my decision.
A huge core factor was that I did not fully believe I could succeed at the next level. So that is exactly what happened. I didn’t.
How you view yourself is the starting point for everything. It will either allow you to rise or become the thing that trips you up when you get close.
Through that experience, I made a vow to myself that I would never cut myself off at the knees again.
I am worthy of success. I deserve the opportunity to create the life I desire and reach the goals I have set for myself.
And so do you.
“If not me, then who could it be?”
Someone is going to succeed.
