Be Open to Receive Your New

Be Open to Receive Your New.
I want you to picture yourself standing beside a stream.
With your dominant hand, make a fist. Clench it as tightly as you can.
With your non-dominant hand, open it. Cup it gently.
Now dip both hands into the water and pull them back out.
Which hand was able to receive the water?
The open hand.
Just as the open hand receives the water, so does the open mind.
One of the clearest indicators that someone is willing to grow, change, and learn is their willingness to hear new thoughts, new ideas, and new perspectives and to have the humility to admit they do not know it all.
I use this example at the beginning of my talks because it helps prime the audience for what they are about to hear. Sometimes it is brand new information. Other times it is something they have heard before but potentially said in a new way that finally resonates.
The same principle applies to the things you may be holding onto in life.
Maybe you have a death grip on a relationship, a bank account, a business, a client, a dream, or the way you thought your life was supposed to go.
And in holding on so tightly, you have made it impossible to receive what is new.
Maybe, in some area of your life, the answer is not to grip harder.
Maybe the answer is to let go.
To loosen your grip.
Because often it is only when we release what we have been clinging to that we are finally able to receive the new blessings, opportunities, and gifts that God has waiting for us.
